SWAZI LAWYERS CALL OFF BOYCOTT

Lawyers in Swaziland have called off their boycott of the courts and are now contacting the kingdom’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to further their complaints about Michael Ramodibedi, the Swazi Chief Justice.

The Law Society of Swaziland is protesting about the breakdown in the administration of justice in the kingdom, ruled by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch.

They are angry at the chief justice who suspended High Court Judge Thomas Masuku on 12 charges, including that he insulted the king. The boycott started last Friday (8 July 2011).

The lawyers have sent a letter to the JSC detailing their complaints. The lawyers have not made the contents of the letter public and say they will make a public statement later.

The Times of Swaziland, the kingdom’s only independent daily newspaper, reported that lawyers might hold a protest march on 27 July when CJ Ramodibedi is due back in Swaziland. He is presently in Botswana where he sits on that country’s court of appeal.
